It might even seem like your job is going great at first. Everything seems interesting enough, and you may actually enjoy the work that you are currently doing. After a while, your office place might eventually feel like it’s the perfect space for you.

But after a while, it’s not uncommon to become disillusioned with your current job. Soon enough, you may feel like:

  • Your manager starting to get on your bad side
  • Your job is frustrating and and work stress starts to build
  • You start to hate going to work each morning

Whether or not these are deal breakers for you, there’s no better time than the present to think about your next game plan. No matter if you are sticking out of your current job or finding a new one, regardless, you need to make a serious change.

Here’s what you should do!

Consider What’s Really Upsetting You

Let’s face it: Every worker has an “off day” from time to time, but if you come home angry, sad or carrying back work stress every workday, then there’s definitely something wrong. To conduct your own self-assessment, think about the following questions:

  • Do you feel engaged at work and is your work challenging enough?
  • Do you have a supportive relationship with your boss or manager?
  • Does your work environment feel positive?
  • Do you feel like your salary or hourly wages are high enough?
  • Is there room for advancement or growth at your job?

Here’s the breakdown. If you feel like shaking your head no to most of these job-related questions, it’s probably time to make an escape plan!

Negotiate With Your Manager

Perhaps you’re unsatisfied with your present job, but don’t think that you should leave yet. While that may be fine in the short term, keeping everything the way it is, will only make you feel even worse in the long term.

To fix this, schedule an appointment to speak with your manager about why you are unhappy. Be sure to bring up any concerns you may have as well. In most situations, your manager will do their best to make the workplace feel like a better space for you.

Otherwise, you may be able to negotiate everything from:

  • An increase in your pay
  • A change in your workload
  • A more flexible schedule
  • A shift in the type of work you do

Pro tip: Even asking your boss for more work from home flexibility may do the trick!

Find More Enjoyable Projects

To be quite honest with you, it’s very difficult to fall in love with everything that you do work. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you should always feel like your job is a bore or gives you work stress.

Take some time to reflect on what brought you to your current position in the first place. Consider the following questions:

  • What parts of your work do you like the most?
  • What do you find most interesting at work?
  • Is there a way to find a new project that you enjoy?

As we mentioned above, the first step is to talk to your boss or manager about switching up your work. Let them know what kind of projects you like and see if they’ll assign you more of that. Explain the work stress you are feeling and how this is affecting your home life. If you have a pitch for a new project, now is the time to let them know.

Who knows – you may end up liking your job again!

Take a Break From Work

If all else fails, and the work stress is getting on top of you, it may be helpful to simply take a break from work, especially if you’re feeling:

  • Completely overwhelmed
  • Constantly stressed out
  • Totally burned out

This is particularly useful for those who have paid time off. If that’s the case, take a couple of days to recharge, rest, and relax. A short break from work and breaking up the work routine can help relieve work stress. 

If you can afford it, take a week-long vacation. By stepping away from the office, you’ll be able to clear your head in no time. However, if you don’t have any paid time off, try taking small breaks throughout your day instead.

For instance, you can always take a walk around your office or the block when you’re feeling overwhelmed. Even getting away from the workplace for just a few minutes is often enough to help you recharge and refocus.
