The world of work is not always plain sailing, especially if you’re an entrepreneur establishing a new business. You will face challenges along the way; there’s not much you can do about that. But, what you can control is your mindset in the face of those challenges. If you let yourself feel defeated by the hurdles you’re facing, then it can seriously bring you down and impede your ability to overcome them.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself
When something goes wrong, it can be easy to place blame or make excuses. Whether you’re blaming yourself or someone else for the situation you’re in, that kind of negativity isn’t helpful. You need to recognize when you start putting undue stress on yourself, and make a conscious decision to move on from that negative thought pattern. The best thing to do is pick yourself back up straight away and get on with doing what you do best.
Focus on the solution, not the problem
Dwelling on the problem isn’t going to get you anywhere. In fact, it can set you back in terms of motivation, energy, and morale. Instead, you should be focusing all your energy and attention to coming up with the solution.
In the face of failure, the solution will require you to either go in a new direction, or improve upon what you were with consistency and patience. Often, making the decision between these two options is the most difficult part of the journey. Neither option is inherently better than the other. Your individual situation will dictate which of these options is the right one. Don’t be afraid to change course—it doesn’t mean that you’re giving up!
Talk to people who understand your situation
It’s a good idea to join a networking group for entrepreneurs in your area or industry. (Check your social media channels for thought leaders and other people who engage in the topics you’re interested in.) These people have been there, done that, and may have even overcome the exact same challenge that you’re currently facing. Advice and support from people like this can be invaluable for your entrepreneurial journey.
Entrepreneurship is a difficult journey that will be paved with failures, but you can’t let those failures and obstacles defeat you.
