How to Stay Calm Under Pressure

We often find ourselves under pressure, whether that’s at work or in other parts of our lives. How we respond to this pressure can play a big part in our success in that situation. Imagine you have to present an idea to your seniors at work, for example, in pursuit of a major project that could further your career. This can be scary, but being able to stay calm and not crumble under the pressure will make you perform much better.

If this is something you struggle with, then read on for some top techniques for staying calm under pressure.

Eliminate distractions

If you’re under the pressure of working towards a deadline, then having lots of things on your plate at once can make it all the more stressful. If possible, shut yourself away in your office with a do not disturb sign on the door so that no one comes to you with additional tasks, or stick your headphones in to drown out background noise if you share an office. Keeping your phone out of sight and on silent also helps you stay focused, as well as turning off email notifications.

Get some perspective

Think about the worst outcome that could arise from this stressful situation. Is it the end of the world? Even if you end up needing an extension on your deadline or not winning that big account, it is unlikely to matter to you in a few years’ time, so it’s not worth getting massively stressed out over now.

Think positive

At the same time as remembering that a bad outcome isn’t all that bad, it’s important that you continue to think positively. You can drive yourself crazy with all the “what if…” scenarios, imagining all the different ways you could fail. But, thinking about the positive outcomes and believing that they can happen should help you to stay calm and hopeful.

Whatever high-pressure situations you find yourself in, remember that you will get through it, and staying calm makes your success in that situation much more likely.
